Each month I select an image to be Jazz FM's Photo of the Month, write a short peice about it and sometimes a little technical information.Horace is one of the stars of the classic post-bop jazz era, famous for his association with the Blue Note record label and his work with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers as well as his many solo albums.I remember getting to the Old Fruit Market (one of my favourite venues) just before the cut-off time for photos. I’d been at another venue across town and rushed over to catch Horace. His small group featured Red Holloway on tenor and they played many of Horace’s well-known compositions including, of course, ‘Song For My Father‘.I used a Hasselblad 500 series camera with a 120mm lens which would have been wide open at f4. I like to shoot at around a 1/60 of a second. Sometimes there’s a little subject movement but it often adds to the image.Ready to frame archival prints are available from only £15.00. A3 posters, £16.50 from the online shop. You can see some background on this photograph in the regular feature on Jazz FM
