William Ellis

In March 2009 I was commissioned by a trio of musicians, Andy Scott, Dave Hassell and Evaristo Aguilar to photograph at Edward James' surreal sculpture gardens 'Las Pozas' set in the dense jungle of the Huestaca region of Central Mexico.

We arrived at night following a 5 hour journey from Tampico in a four wheel drive.

A number of the images were used on the the CD 'Naked Footprints' - music inspired by the gardens and recorded in Tampico directly after the expedition. The photographs were projected during performances on a tour of the UK by the trio earlier this year.

I found the beauty and tranquility of the gardens simultaneously beguiling - with a sinister spirit.
